We left the hospitality of friends the next morning... after breakfast of the most excellent homemade chocolate pancakes, courtesy of Kyle.
Next stop? Santa Monica, baby! The official start of our Route 66 travels!
again got to experience Los Angeles area traffic... I'd almost
forgotten how much "fun" it was. And we weren't even in rush traffic.
We'd been to LA once before back in '03 and were so fortunate as to
experience actual rush traffic then. It made me appreciate Chicago
traffic, if that's possible.
We arrived and parked out on Santa
Monica Pier, and took a couple of hours to stop and tool around some
before leaving... wander the boardwalk, ride a couple of the amusement
park rides, indulge in a funnel cake/waffle cone, and get our feet wet
in the Left Coast.
The view north from the pier.
A couple of street entertainers kept the boardwalk lively.
The amusement park... as seen from the ferris wheel.
And as seen from the roller coaster.
The trapeze people practicing on the boardwalk...
The the end of the beginning? I suppose so since we're driving this thing backwards.
officially begin by about 2:30pm. One of our pre-concieved rules
before beginning the Mother Road home was to not drive after dark - we
wanted to see as much of it as we could along the way.
So for the
remainder of the afternoon, we drove through Santa Monica, Los Angeles,
Beverly Hills... and all points east. Some of it was neat to see, and
some of it felt like cruising through the Chicago suburbs... minus all
the palm trees. We stop just after dark near the La Verne/Clairmont, CA
area. Found this groovy little rotisserie restaurant to dine, popped
over to a Panera bread to make use of their wi-fi and check in, and then
found a quiet parking lot it which to let the Jeep rest, and us too.
